The mysterious Moon Wanderers — the most recognizable and popular image I've created. According to the legend, they travel in boats along the dark side of the Earth, forever asleep, moving with the moonlight — either sleeping or immersed in deep meditation.
This series came from a childhood question: what happens in the world when everyone is asleep? And if there's a dark side of the moon, then surely there's a night side of the earth too.
At first there was no story around them — just a set of sketches I made sitting on the floor, rocking a baby's cradle with my left hand.
When Brian McCarty photographed these figures, he told me about the song "It's Only a Paper Moon," which came to his mind the first time he saw them — that's when I decided to tell
a short story in which a paper moon appears.
Moon Fox and Moon Cat (polyurethane, 2009) are in the permanent collection of The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY — a gift from Brian McCarty.
